If you’re unsure which autumn trends to buy into, let me guide you in the right direction: winter coats will instantly pull together any look. Whether you’re throwing it over a suit, a dress or joggers, it will be your new wardrobe staple, for this season and beyond.
For autumn/winter 2021, outerwear takes centre stage, as seen at virtual catwalks from Max Mara to Isabel Marant and Khaite. Here’s your lowdown of all the best winter coat trends you need to know about.
Autumn/winter 2021 coat trends
Since this season is all about the joy of dressing up again, let’s start at the maximalist end of the spectrum, shall we? The runways were awash with bright hues, and it would be a shame not to indulge. I loved Balmain’s bubblegum pink trench, Khaite’s bright red puffer and COS’ cobalt blue double-breasted coat.
Colour-blocking is key here, so either go bold and wear the same shade head-to-toe à la Versace and Roksanda, or mix it up with different complementary colours.
For a slightly more casual approach, the puffer jacket is back with a vengeance, but don’t be fooled. It’s extra chic this season, and you can absolutely get away with wearing it with your more formal attire. At Rick Owens it was long, dove-grey and cape-like, at Isabel Marant it was cropped with a faux fur collar, while at STAUD it was sleeveless and oversized.
Don’t worry, there is also plenty of choice if you want a more minimalist approach. Although camel coats are still very much a staple, this season they make way for richer tones of chocolate and coffee. Look to Burberry, Chloé and Acne Studios for inspiration, from suede aviator jackets to sleek duster coats.
For a lighter option, do check out my trench coat – a great option for the transitional period. This season’s winter coats line-up is brilliantly diverse, so it’ll be hard to choose…
