Congratulations — you’ve made it through another year! Although 2021 was almost as much of a fever dream as 2020, the only way to move on is to move forward into 2022. With the New Year approaching, we thought we’d take a peak at what’s ahead using one of our favourite divination methods: tarot card pulls.

For those of you that don’t know, tarot is a practice that uses a deck of cards to provide a sense of direction. There are personalised readings for individual insights, but in this case, we’re going to be looking at a collective pull that will offer more general insights for the year to come.

We sat down with Sarah Potter, a tarot reader, professional witch, and colour magic practitioner, for a collective 2022 tarot reading to help guide you into the new year and beyond. Spoiler alert: Things are looking up. Click through to see what lies ahead.

Wheel of Fortune

The first card Potter pulls is pretty exciting, due to the fact that it’s a Major Arcana card (they’re the most impactful cards in the deck and they represent big, fated events). “The Major Arcana points to major shifts, big lessons, and karmic cycles. This is a moment!” she says. “This is going to be an impactful year.”

The Wheel of Fortune’s main message, according to Potter, is that the only constant is change, and we have to keep moving and going with the flow as the year continues on. This card gives very “what goes up must come down” vibes, but it always goes back up again, so we’re starting off 2022 on a positive note.

The main thing this card wants you to remember as you go into the new year is that you have control and agency over your life. “You can get in the driver’s seat and harness those changes, and you can be an advocate of change for yourself,” Potter says. “The main message is, if you’ve been having a hard time, your luck is changing. And hey, if you’ve been thriving, do what you can to keep that momentum up.”

One major piece of advice for this year is to notice any cosmic messages, symbols, or angel numbers that are making themselves present. “Anything that feels like it’s guiding you in the right direction, follow that,” Potter says.

Knight of Pentacles

The next card pulled is the Knight of Pentacles. Knights are go-getters and usually symbolise action, while Pentacles are what Potter likes to call “human stuff,” or how we live and how we make our money. “This is a really good time to make a big shift when it comes to career or home life,” she says.

This card, coupled with the change that the Wheel of Fortune is bringing us, will be extra potent in the beginning of the year. “Think about what kind of changes you want to make in your career and maybe even in your home,” Potter says. If you’ve been wanting to move, do it! If you’ve been dying to paint the walls or change up your scenery, now is your chance. On the flip slide, if you want to change careers or you want a promotion, use the beginning of the year to set that plan in motion.

Even if a promotion or a big move aren’t entirely realistic right now, what matters here is that you work to put a plan in place to move forward. Take this as a sign to go for your wildest dreams — you never know what might happen.

King of Wands

Next we have the King of Wands, a card that has the perfect entrepreneurial energy to match the previous Knight of Pentacles and elevate it even further. And this time, we’re bringing that big dream energy to not only us, but those around us.

“This is a card of leadership and creating opportunities for other people through a big vision,” Potter says. “What I’m seeing here is, who can you bring with you? Who can you create success for? Who can you create excitement and adventure for by bringing them with you?”

This energy has us in visionary mode as we think on a grand scale.”If you want to make something happen, if you want to make a big change in your life that’s going to have an impact on you, the beginning of 2022 is when you really want to do that,” Potter says.

Again, this card (along with the ones before it) is asking you to pinpoint exactly where you want to make these changes in your career and home life. The key here is to not limit yourself. Right now, anything is possible, and the luck brought by the Wheel of Fortune carries through – the world is within your grasp.Photographed by Joel Arbaje.

Justice

The rest of the spread for this reading consists of all Major Arcana cards, which means that 2022 is going to be a big year, Potter says. Justice is a card that brings along a balanced energy, which is something we might all be craving after the uncertainty of the past two years. Another significant theme here? The righting of wrongs.

“Don’t be surprised if some moments that felt really unfair in the recent past come to justice,” Potter says. This isn’t something you have to push forward yourself, though. She emphasises that there’s a certain kind of karmic cycle closing this year, and the truths that need to emerge from the darkness will bring themselves to the light.

“You just have to be you and trust and understand that the universe is blessing you and the universe is behind you, and the truth will come out,” she says. In particular, this energy is strong in the second half of 2022 so hang on to your patience in the meantime. “Keep doing what you’re doing, harness those changes, dream big,” Potter says. “Don’t hold yourself back and just know that everything’s going to fall into place.”

The Moon (reversed)

Next Potter pulls the Moon card reversed, which means it came out of the deck upside down. This card tends to point towards our subconscious, and often tells us to follow our intuition.

Here, the message of the Justice card is being made even stronger. “If anything has been seemingly unclear, especially in the past two years, it will come to light in the second half of 2022,” Potter says. “I’m feeling like there’s just a lot of resolution in 2022.”

The fog that’s been trailing us over the past two years clears in 2022, giving us clarity over any past situations or circumstances that didn’t make sense at the time, Potter says.Photographed by Joel Arbaje.

The Empress

For her last pull, Potter focused on a final message — at the end of the day, what do we need to know to succeed in 2022. In response, she pulled The Empress.

“The Empress is this nurturing energy. I feel like this is the support you need in making things happen and in planting seeds of intention,” she says. “It’s nurturing yourself. It’s honouring your own self-care and mirroring it out to the rest of the world and to the people you love and care about around you.”

The more love and energy you pour into yourself, the more you have to send outward too. “That’s how you make these big things happen and you roll with the punches,” Potter says. “It’s going to be a good year.
