With the change of season often comes the desire to change up your mop. But instead of reaching for the scissors or convincing yourself that a baby fringe will look different on you this time (it won’t), perhaps it’s time to book in at your favourite salon for a hue upgrade.

In 2022, we’re embracing experimentation with beauty, and maybe even revisiting the trends we thought we’d never crawl back to (hello, blue mermaid hair). A good cut is hard to find, but a fun colour is a great way to kickstart the year.

We tapped the experts at Edwards & Co for their take on the hottest hair colour trends in Australia. Praised as the pinnacle of knowledge when it comes to hair colour, founder Jaye Edwards knows a solid trend when he sees one. From the new wave of peach copper, to the low-maintenance ‘bronde’, read on for the hair colour trends he and his team are tipping to be huge in the year ahead.

Warm Bronde

Want to go blonde but can’t stand the regular touch-ups? Edwards suggests teetering on the bronde spectrum. “This shade is great for blondes who don’t want constant touch-ups and is perfect for brunettes wanting to lighten things up a little,” he says. “Defined by its natural and lived-in vibe, this look is effortless and low maintenance, the perfect way to add some pop to your natural colour for winter.”

Peachy Copper

“Peachy copper tones are a great way to bring vibrancy back to natural coppers, while still maintaining a natural look,” says Edwards. Just like Kendall Jenner’s recent transformation, it’s also a great way to make a bold change while keeping to a neutral(ish) palette.

Sun-kissed Curls

We may be heading into the chilly season, but nothing brightens up a rainy day outfit like some highlights. “Sun-kissed bronde tones seamlessly blended to enhance natural hair colour are the perfect way to make your natural curls pop,” says Edwards, adding that this look requires treatment to maintain its lustre.

“The key to styling this look is hydration, ensure you are investing in quality products for hydrated curls, free from frizz and defined to perfection.”

Scandi Blonde

“An Instagram and Tiktok favourite, the Scandi blonde, is back in a big way,” claims Edwards. But it’s certainly not for everyone, as the stylist urges that committing to the colour care is key. “Scandi blonde is the clean, white and bright blonde that’s even more high-maintenance than a scalp bleach. Free from any yellow or ash tones, this look is going to require regular glosses and some quality products for at-home maintenance.” Basically, if you barely have time to wash your hair, let alone tone it, perhaps stick with something more low maintenance.

Natural Brunette

“Deep, rich brunette is always in style, offering a sophisticated and timeless vibe,” says Edwards. But where mousey brown had its moment, we’re now seeing bolder, chocolate tones that reflect warmly in the sun, so it never looks dull.
