Harry Styles is, as many have previously stated, a renaissance man. He is also a very busy man. He sings, dances, models, endlessly tours, owns Pleasing, one of the most hyped celebrity beauty lines out there, and single-handedly brought feather boas back. Not to mention, is cultivating a burgeoning acting career that ranges from wartime action flicks (Dunkirk) and comedic animal impersonations (SNL) to independent psychological thrillers (Don’t Worry Darling) and historical romances (My Policeman).

In fact, whenever this man steps out in public, it sends the Internet (and us, we admit) into a spin. Case in point: his latest venture to the Venice Film Festival to promote Don’t Worry Darling and all the wonderful, seventies-inspired looks he sported for the occasion. A sweet relief amongst all the drama, hype, headlines and memes surrounding the film. We can already sense the very chokehold each look will have on our own autumn wardrobes.

We’re hardly surprised. Over the last few years, Harry has popularised some of the biggest trends of the day. That’s from pearl necklaces and bucket hats to bold suits and crochet knits. He’s firmly established himself as one of fashion’s most influential figures — a Gucci darling with his own, upcoming collection, a Vogue cover and a co-chair position at the 2019 MET Gala under his belt. Between his friendship with Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele, his partnership with stylist Harry Lambert, and his wear-anything mentality, the Harry’s House singer will surely go down in fashion history as one of this decade’s most prominent dressers.

So, consider this an ode to Mr Styles’ impact on the fashion industry — all the trends he’s had a leading role in shaping, plus where to shop them all.

Neck scarves

Sure, neck scarfs are nothing new — they’ve long been a staple in Old Hollywood film and glamorous addition to many iconic outfits, from Audrey Hepburn to Grace Kelly. So really, this is a clever nod from Harry for his first major film premiere.

Making his debut at the Venice Film Festival, Harry offset his cream pinstripe jacket and navy flares with a light blue neck scarf. Finished off with Gucci sunglasses and loafers, this outfit is straight from his upcoming collaboration with Gucci, the HA HA HA collection. After all, it is the perfect opportunity to market the collection, which is reportedly launching in October 2022.

Statement collars

When you think Harry Styles, you probably think statement collars. He wore one at the 2020 Brit Awards (with a pearl necklace, naturally), to his friend Jeffrey Azoff’s wedding, which he attended with alleged girlfriend Olivia Wilde and on the cover of his latest album, Harry’s House. Why, the look has even gone on to be recreated for SNL, when Timothée Chalamet impersonated Styles on the show.

Though nothing can top the fluffy collar he sported earlier this year for the Today Show, this latest is sure up there on our list of ‘best Harry Styles collars’. The exaggerated, Seventies style shirt and navy blue suit are Gucci, naturally, and the shirt style is similar to those shown in Gucci’s 2023 Cruise collection.

Pearl necklaces

During the press tour for his hit album Fine Line in December 2019, Styles began wearing a pearl necklace to every single event he attended, pairing it with cartoon-adorned cardigans and custom Gucci x Fine Line merch worn with high-waisted trousers. Though we’re onto another album and another era, Styles hasn’t stored away his trusty pearls. Rather, he continues to debut covetable new styles; opting for bolder, brighter, more colourful variations.

Colourblock cardigans

We knew Styles had reach in the fashion community. What we didn’t know was just how far his reach went. In 2020, we got our answer. Over that long, hot, lockdown summer, months after Styles wore a JW Anderson patchwork cardigan for a TODAY appearance, his fans on TikTok got an idea: To DIY his cardigan, which cost over $1,800 (£1,500), and document the process on the popular social media app. Even today, two years later, TikTok’s #HarryStylesCardigan page has a staggering 111.2 million views. It doesn’t look like the king of grandpa knits’ reign is ending anytime soon.

Embroidery

In 2021, Styles was photographed leaving BBC Radio 2 in corduroy pants, a striped T-shirt, and a green jacket by Bode that features embroidered pictures of underwater plants and a ship. Like knitting, mending, and patchworking, embroidery became one of the most popular DIY trends in lockdown — probably because of how cathartic it is to continuously jab at fabric with a needle during times of stress. Styles’ stamp of approval didn’t hurt, though.

Argyle Sweaters

Admittedly, it wasn’t just Styles who caused an uptick in popularity for argyle sweaters — Waller-Bridge and Wilde helped, too. In January, following the release of his music video for “Treat People With Kindness,” in which both Styles and Waller-Bridge wore argyle sweater vests — as well as a paparazzi spotting of Wilde wearing a pink-and-brown argyle sweater vest — Lyst reported a 39% month-over-month increase in search for similar knitwear. In addition, the site saw a 26% increase in search for “argyle” sweaters and a 17% jump in page views for sweater vests.

Crochet Tops

Within 24 hours of Harry Styles’ music video debut of “Watermelon Sugar,” search spiked for all of the fashion items featured in it, including Hawaiian shirts and pieces from Bode. Also popular? Crochet tops, which rose in search on Lyst by 6%, and have since become a major trend, both on DIY TikTok and on Instagram. Fashion brands ranging from Miu Miu to SERIES NY also hopped on board.

Bucket Hats

Styles’ Éliou pearl necklace wasn’t the only trendy item featured in “Golden.” In addition to billowy shirts and a mint-coloured Gucci blazer (which caused a 52% spike in search on Lyst for turquoise and blue blazers), the singer also wore a bright yellow bucket hat, which led to a 92% increase in search on the site. Though already a prominent trend among celebrities, Styles’ wearing of the hat style may have advanced the accessory to peak popularity.

Statement collars

At the 2020 Brit Awards, Styles wore an eyelet collar on the red carpet. With the look, he added a purple sweater (that matched his painted fingernails!), a brown suit, and a pair of patent leather Mary-Janes — another top trend at the moment. The look — collar included — went on to be recreated for SNL in December, when Timothée Chalamet impersonated Styles on the show.
