It dates back to 2018
Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber have hit the headlines in recent days, surrounding the ongoing debate around Justin Bieber’s relationship with them both back in 2018.
Over the years there has been speculation there could have been an overlap between the 28-year-old singer splitting up with the Rare beauty founder and him dating his now wife, with fans of Selena claiming Hailey stole Justin from her.
Now the conversation has come to the fore once again after the 25-year-old model recently spoke on the Call Her Daddy podcast.
This interview marks the first time Hailey has spoken publicly on her relationship and those rumours, which has seen her face backlash from fans and social media users, particularly over whether her relationship overlapped with Justin dating on and off ex-girlfriend Selena, and being slammed for being a “home wrecker”.
When did Justin date Selena?
Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez first started dating in 2010.
The former couple were on and off for eight years.
They first met in 2009 after being introduced by their managers, after Justin had hinted he had long had a crush on the Come & Get It hitmaker.
They first made their romance official when they attended the Vanity Fair Oscars Party together in 2011, but split two years later due to their conflicting work schedules, and Selena’s supposed “trust issues”.
Just a few months later, in April 2013, they reunited, but by the end of the year they had split once again.
This on-off relationship continues, but in 2014 they split once again, and this is when Justin was first reported to be romantically linked to Hailey Bieber – then Baldwin – although they denied rumours they were dating.
By 2015, Justin had admitted he had moved in with Selena, but their relationship became comparable to a marriage, according to Complex.
At the time he said: “I learned a lot. I moved in with my girlfriend [Gomez] when I was 18. Started my own life with her. It was a marriage kind of thing. Living with a girl, it was just too much at that age.”
By November Justin appeared to be with Selena, but by December 2015, he was pictured kissing Hailey on a holiday in St. Barths, much to Selena’s upset who claimed she was “so done” in an interview with Rolling Stone.
By 2017 it seems “Jelena” are back together, in 2018 they make it Instagram official once more.
However, days later a source told PEOPLE, the former couple “weren’t getting along and decided to take a break.”
But the break was for good. Months later Justin is engaged, then married, to someone else. Hailey.
When did Hailey and Justin start dating?
December 2014 was when Hailey and Justin – who wed in 2018 – were first romantically linked.
The pair are said to have been longtime friends with one another, but when a photo emerged of the pair kissing on a New Year’s holiday together, many jumped to the conclusion they were dating.
However, the pair denied this, and Justin insisted he was “super single” and Hailey is a “good friend” on an Instagram post.
It has since been reported 2016 was when their romance kicked off as Justin spoke out on Instagram and confirmed the relationship to GQ a month later, in which he said Hailey was “someone I really love”.
However, Hailey denied they were exclusive as Justin was about to embark on tour.
By June 2018 the duo were spotted on numerous outings together, which varied from church visits to nightclub outings, plus many outings of the pair kissing and packing on the PDA.
In July 2018 Justin proposed to Hailey in the Bahamas.
Fast forward to September of the same year and the couple had reached another huge milestone in their relationship, as they tied the knot at an N.Y.C Courthouse.
The following year they enjoyed a religious ceremony in 2019 in South Carolina with a reported 154 guests.

Following Selena and Justin’s split, and his new romance with Hailey, Selena released the track Lose You To Love Me, which some fans took as an indirect dig at Justin and his new romance.
Selena has since spoken about the break-up in various interviews, including a Saturday Night Live, which she hosted in May 2022.
But Hailey has remained silent, until now.
The Rhode beauty founder has claimed over the years she has been trolled about her relationship with Justin, and branded a “home wrecker”, but has insisted that wasn’t the case.
Speaking on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Hailey put all speculation to bed and shared her side of the story.
When asked by host Alexandra Cooper about any overlap, Hailey replied: “No. Not one time. When him and I started hanging out, like, okay. Let’s just put it this way: When him and I ever started hooking up or anything of that sort, he was not ever in a relationship, ever, at any point. It’s not my character to mess with someone’s relationship. I would just never do that. I was raised better than that. I’m not interested in doing that and I never was.”
“I can say period point-blank I was never with him when he was in a relationship with anybody. That’s the end of it.”
Hailey is aware of how rekindling their relationship, getting engaged, and married, within a short space of time after Justin’s split from the Only Murders In The Building actor looks, but has insisted it isn’t how naysayers see it.
She continued: “I understand how it looks from the outside and there’s a lot of perception there. But that was a situation where I know for a fact that it was the right thing for them to close that door.
“They were not in a relationship at that time, but of course there’s a very long history there.
“It’s not my relationship, it has nothing to do with me, so I respect that a lot. But I know that it closed a chapter, and I think it was the best thing that could have happened for him to move on and be engaged and get married and, like, move on with his life in that way.
“It’s hard for me to talk about this because I don’t want to talk on either one of their behalf, again, because it was their relationship and I honestly respect that very deeply. But I just know what was going on when we got back together.”
“A lot of the hate and perpetuation comes from, ‘Oh, you stole him.’ And I guess maybe that comes from the fact that they wish he ended up with someone else. And that’s fine, you can wish that all you want, but that’s just not the case.”
Hailey has revealed she has spoken to Selena, and the pair have hashed everything out, and the three of them know the truth.
She added: “Yes, [we have spoken]. Yes [we have spoken after my marriage].
“So that’s why I’m like, it’s all respect, it’s all love. It’s also why I feel like if everybody on our side knows what happened, and we’re good and we could walk away with clarity and respect, then that’s fine. Which had brought me a lot of peace, and I’m like, ‘Hey, we know what happened. It is what it is.’”
Following Hailey’s interview, Selena carried out a live chat on TikTok in which Selena urges fans of hers, Hailey, and Justin, to be kind and to stop trolling all three of them about the past.
Some fans have shared the end of the clip on social media platforms. In the snippet, Selena – who celebrated her 30th birthday earlier this year with best friend Taylor Swift – said: “I think some of the things that I don’t even need to be aware of are just vile and disgusting. And it’s not fair because no one ever should be spoken to in the manner that I’ve seen and all I have to say is it’s incredibly ironic that I would release something that is all about kind words because that’s exactly what I want. That’s it. If you support Rare, I cannot thank you enough, but know that you are also representing what it means and that is words matter. Truly matter. So it’s coming from me, and I just want all of you to know that I hope that you understand that this is much bigger than anything else. I’m really grateful to all of you for hearing me out, so have a wonderful rest of your day, and I appreciate all the love. Thank you.”
