The Cannes Film Festival is all about glamour and this year, there was no shortage of glamour. With beauty looks that ranged from the most natural (#nomakeup) to bold smokey eyes, celebs put their best face and hair forward. Catch the best looks of the year’s most glamorous event here.
Best Hair & Makeup Looks from the Cannes Film Festival 2016
Ah, Cannes… It’s the ultimate party of the year with a week of photo-calls, dinners, screenings, and parties taking place on the Mediterranean coast of one of the world’s most beautiful countries, France. Cannes has not only become synonymous for great cinema, it’s become known as the event to catch a glimpse of celebrities at their best-dressed.
This year was no different. As hoards of celebrities flocked to the breezy coast, thousands of paparazzi followed them to snap photos of their couture dresses and tuxedos, and, expertly-crafted hair and makeup. And, because we love fangirl-ing over new beauty trends, we just had to round up stand-out looks for our readers.
Below are looks that transcended the boundaries of red carpet makeup, took on a life of their own, or accentuated the personality of the celeb who wore them. These are looks we’d love to try, but even more importantly, love looking at.
Enjoy!
1. Blake Lively
Blake Lively’s look screams spring with healthy, bronze skin and flushed pink lips. Feeling as if we haven’t seen her on the red carpet since forever, it’s refreshing to know Mrs. Reynolds style game is as on point as ever.
2. Soko
We loved Soko’s Victorian era-inspired look. The minimal base with taupe makeup works well on her fair skin and dark bob. Overall, it was a beautiful look for Cannes.
3. Susan Sarandon
After all of these years, Susan Sarandon has still got it. While this icon always dazzles on the red carpet, we had to put her on this list for those stylin’ glasses alone. We’re not sure what the backstory is on them or whether Miss Sarandon was trying to hide blue eyeshadow, but whatever the reason, we are digging it.
4. Caitriona Balfe
Don’t underestimate the power of a pink lip, ladies. Caitriona proved that theory as fact with her minimalist look whose primary feature was a bold pink lip. What we also love about Caitriona’s look is her side-swept French braid. This is definitely the look to recreate for spring.
5. Kirsten Dunst
I’m a huge Kirsten Dunst fan. And I’m not a fan because of her style or beauty choices (which are always on point and uniquely Kirsten), I’m a fan of her acting. I loved her in Virgin Suicides and Melancholia and god, I just wish she was in more! Anyway, I digress… Kirsten Dunst killed it at this year’s festival with a retro yellow dress and classic red lip. This goes to show that red and yellow are always a good color combination.
6. Kristen Stewart
Going platinum-blonde was one of the best stylistic choices Kristen Stewart has ever made. The bold on-trend color accentuates her individual style and attitude. At this year’s film fest, Kristen rocked a classic grunge duo: platinum-blonde hair and kohl smokey eyes. The look is very Saint Laurent and we love it.
7. Jessica Chastain
Whoa, Jessica Chastain was channeling some serious Jessica Rabbit vibes with her Old Hollywood waves and vibrant red lip. We love the contrast between her red lip and blue dress — it’s a stunning combination on her skin tone.
8. Melanie Thierry
Melanie Thierry defied red carpet fashion with her uber-minimal (we don’t even think she wore makeup) Cannes look. She somehow managed to make #IWokeUpLikeThis look #RedCarpetReady with her messy top knot and bare skin.
9. Lily Donaldson
While this look is a bit too dark for our liking (it’s spring!), I can’t ever resist a good dark lip and what Lily Donaldson wore on the red carpet is a good dark lip. The look would have been perfect for fall or for an event that’s not on the French-Mediterranean shore in the outdoors with natural, bright light. Know what we’re sayin’?
10. Tanya Dyagileva
Artist Tanya Dyagileva brought the smolder, didn’t she? Where most actresses, aside from Eva Longoria, stuck to natural, no-makeup looks, Tanya said, “Eff it!” and went for a dark smokey eye, mauve lip and killer side braids. We love the drama this entire look, when pulled together, brings.
11. Aymeline Valade
French model Aymeline Valade channeled some serious Marlene Dietrich vibes in her androgynous, powerful Cannes Film Festival look. She kept her hair and makeup simple, but paired a dazzling women’s tuxedo with drop earrings. The contrast between the structure of the tuxedo and the femininity of the earrings is brilliant. This was one of our favorite looks of the festival.
