Deal With Frizzy Curly Hair With Hair Plopping!

How do you control curly hair? My hair is not naturally curly, but it gets wavy. Once in a while, I use curling irons to give my hair some volume and my face a totally different look. Either way, I completely understand what a frizzy hair means, so I’d like to share with you a practical tip: hair plopping.

What Is Hair Plopping?

If you go to Google and type “hair plopping,” you’ll see photos of women – and even men – wearing what looks like turbans. That’s the point of the technique! It is wrapping your damp hair with a fabric or a cloth (like a shirt) for air drying.

What Do You Get For Hair Plopping?

Why do people plop, and why are they crazy about it? Hair plopping is considered one of the best ways to tame a frizzy curly or wavy hair!

To be clear, not all types of curly hair are frizzy. I’ve seen really gorgeous ones in my industry. However, if you have curly hair, then you know you’re prone to frizziness. That’s when your hair stands up as if you’ve just been electrocuted or seen a ghost. It doesn’t look really good. To make things worse, frizzy hair is not easy to control. In fact, sometimes, the more you comb it, the more it gets frizzier. Crazy!

Hair plopping solves that in two ways: (1) you avoid using heat such as hair dryers and (2) you don’t dry your hair with towels. Actually, you can use a cotton towel for plopping, but the problem with this is you may end up rubbing your hair, which will only defeat the purpose.

Is it effective? Yes, it does work! Better yet, it works for almost all types of curly hair, even those that are color treated.

When Is The Best Time To Do Hair Plopping?

Hair plopping doesn’t take a lot of time. There may be a learning curve, especially during your first few tries, but once you get past it, it will take you around 3 minutes to complete. You can then leave the “turban” on for at least 30 minutes to an hour. If you want the best results, leave it overnight.

The waiting time may be the killer here, but you can actually do many things on the side. You can paint your nails or shop for a holiday outfit. I prefer to plan my next blog post 🙂 Or just sleep. Sleep is good, you know. There’s also no limit as to how many times you can do it per week.

How Do You Do Hair Plopping?

The steps to hair plopping are so simple:

Tip: Don’t rub your hair with the towel! Rather, try to squeeze out the excess water with your hands or use fabric, like a shirt’s, for hair plopping.

1. Gather the things you need.

Hair products are optional, but I like to use them to give my hair more awesome results. If you have a naturally curly hair, I highly recommend Roots Naturelle Bouncy Curls Ultra Rich Hydrating Creme, which helps trap the moisture of your hair. In turn, it appears voluminous, shiny, and bouncy!

You can then combine it with It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In Product for extra shine.

2. Combine your hair products.

Place a few drops of these products on your palm, combine them, and then apply them from root to tip.

3. Comb your damp hair.

You can use your fingers to separate your hair strands, but for curly hair, get this instead. It works for both adults’ and kids’ hair and features a dual-bristle design, so it can work with even the hard tangled parts of your hair. Best of all, it comes with a money-back guarantee.

These products are truly great, and they’re cheap. They cost you no more than $20 each. And if you use this promo code NCSAVE10 when you buy them from Amazon, you’ll get more savings!

4. Do the hair plop.

Now your hair is prepped, it’s time to plop!

  • Lay your fabric (preferably a large shirt with long sleeves) on a flat surface like your bed or a kitchen countertop. Make sure the sleeves are spread out.
  • Slowly bend forward until your head almost reaches the shirt.
  • Gather your damp hair toward the center of the shirt.
  • Bring the upper section of your shirt toward your nape, so the shirt covers your head.
  • Pull the sides of your shirt, and together with the sleeves, roll them.
  • Tuck the remaining parts of the shirt to secure the turban fully, especially if you’re planning to wear it overnight.

That’s it! Hair plopping’s done.
