Is The Silicone Makeup Sponge The Next Best Thing?

When I first heard about the silicone makeup sponge I wanted to try it out as soon as I could. As a professional makeup artist, a makeup applicator that will cut my product consumption in half and will be a breeze to clean is heaven sent. So with a bit of research and personal use, here’s my silicone makeup sponge review. If you haven’t tried out the silicone makeup sponge that’s taking the beauty world off its feet, I have the review just for you.

What is the Silisponge?

On the get-go, when I first received my package containing the silicone makeup sponge, I see that it’s a clear gel like pouch that is smooth on both sides about half an inch thick and about 2 inches by 3 inches around. I used it as soon as I opened the packaging and although my first go wasn’t as successful, I had to say I love how easy to clean this product is.

Unlike the regular makeup sponge where you have to soap and squeeze out what you can, you only need to rinse the silicone makeup sponge in soap and running water and dry it with a towel or tissue and voila! It’s ready for reuse. You can even disinfect this in 70% isopropyl alcohol, now who wouldn’t like that?

If cleaning is a breeze, the application isn’t as easy as I thought it would be, but I just love how convenient this tool is for a professional makeup artist so I was willing to give it another shot. this time using a liquid foundation –

I used a drugstore brand of liquid foundation this time around, with half the amount of what I usually use, and instead of blending it across the face I applied using a tapping motion much like how Jeffree Star did it in his review and demo video of the silisponge. Surprised as I am, it worked way better without any streaks.

Judging by the look of the foundation on Jeffree Star and his reactions, he must have really liked how the application turned out.

So of course, the next test is to try using the silicone makeup sponge on other people by employing the same tapping motion to transfer product on the face and so far it has worked perfectly as well. Although it’s a bit tricky to get in smaller corners like the corners of the nose and eyes or with using a more viscous product like a cream-based foundation or a thicker consistency concealer…

It’s definitely usable and it gives a really good velvety finish without any streaks. I have yet to try it on dry, flaky skin but I imagine, since flaky skin needs less abrasion, the silicone makeup sponge might be a good product to use. I have to give it a try on troubled skin too, in order to give a proper feedback, but just judging how stiff the silicone makeup sponge is, it might be harder to press the product down on acne-prone skin, I suppose that will be an update on this blog entry.

If there is one thing I learned while testing this product out, that is to be open to possibilities. Initially, I thought that blending foundation with this tool will not work, but because I decided to give it another try and used a different technique other than what I know, the silisponge is something I’m considering to use more often because of how hygienic it is and how well it can blend foundation on bigger skin surface.
