Best Undereye Concealer Tips for a Flawless Finish
If I am to choose between foundation and concealer, I will choose concealer any day. The late night hours have taken its toll on my eyes and I have no choice but to turn to my concealer. But, ladies, know that applying concealer is an art. It’s not just something you dab or apply like how you would a body lotion. It is important that you know how to apply it, which type or shade of concealer to use, and the other concealer tricks that will guarantee a flawless finish. Without further ado, here are the best undereye concealer tips you should know:
1. Choose your shade.
Just like foundation, it is a definite must to choose the right shade of foundation for your face. Makeup experts suggest that for concealer, it must be one to two shades lighter than your skin tone. If you have no idea which shade you should get, the guide above should narrow down your choices for both undereye and blemish concealers.
2. Get the right color.
Generally, the best concealer shades to get for the undereye circles is either pink or peach. But if you want to go into further detail, you’d want to assess the color of the undereye circles first. If it’s blue, go for an orange shade. If it’s blue/purple, go for something salmon. For purple undereye circles, a yellow-based concealer is best.
3. Color correct.
To really achieve that flawless finish under the eyes, you must prime or color correct first. Please refer to the photo above to determine which kind of color corrector you need. Color correctors help balance the skin tone first, allowing your concealer to work its magic a little faster.
4. Choose the best kind.
It’s always ideal to have at least two concealers that you use for your undereye circles. That’s because different concealer formulas work different ways. That will also depend on the look you’re going to do. So to be on the safe side, have at least two go-to concealers for your undereye circles.
5. Use a concealer brush.
When applying concealer, it is a must that you use a concealer brush at all times. Sure, there will be days where your finger is the best tool you’ll have. But as much as possible, stick to the concealer brush. You’d want your concealer to be buffed and blended well and only a concealer brush (or a Beauty Blender) can do that. Between the two, the brush is easier to use.
6. Use your ring finger.
If you don’t like using a concealer brush for applying concealer, apply with your ring finger instead. Why? The ring finger is the weakest and it will help you apply concealer with the right amount of pressure, especially with the delicate skin around the eyes.
7. Foundation first.
There’s good reason why you should apply foundation first before concealer. For one, you’ll be using less concealer since the foundation provides good coverage. Next, it’s easier to blend foundation and concealer better this way. Plus, if you choose to apply concealer first, it’s going to be wiped out anyway once the foundation is applied. That would be a waste.
8. Draw a triangle.
Gone are the days when we only apply concealer directly under the eyes. Now, you must draw a triangle under the eyes for two reasons. First, it effectively conceals dark undereye circles. And second, it gives the face an instant lift.
9. Mix eye products.
If you have puffy eyes, just mix eye cream, highlighter, and concealer and apply by your temples and over the brow bone. This will help brighten the eye area and reduce the appearance of puffy under eyes.
10. Dab with tissue.
Need to remove extra concealer? Split a 2-ply tissue in half and use one layer to dab the extra concealer on your face. You can also use the same technique to remove excess oil when your concealer starts to cake within the day.
11. For medium coverage.
Do you need medium coverage? If so, start by tapping concealer on the inner corner of the eyes while working your way to the outer corners. Using an eyeshadow brush, buff and blend smoothly.
12. For full coverage.
For full coverage, start with a corrector. Apply it on the darkest part of your eyes. After that, use a concealer brush to gently pat your concealer around the eyes. Please make sure to choose a concealer that is one shade lighter than your skin tone.
13. Set with a sponge.
Want to make sure that your foundation and concealer combo will last throughout the day and night? The secret is setting it. After applying the foundation and concealer, set with setting powder. For the face, use a powder brush. But for under the eyes, it’s best to use a sponge instead as it can be maneuvered easier to cover the corners of the eyes.
