The Dutch Braid is probably the hottest hairstyle this summer season, thanks to major influencers sporting the look. Dutch braids or boxer braids as some would call it is like a regular braid but it flips the braid over so that the weave shows. It locks the hair tighter and is a little less messy, but also a little bit trickier to do.

If you’ve been trying to do the dutch braid on yourself but it just gets really confusing on your hand-eye coordination, then this step-by-step tutorial is actually what you need.

For today’s easy step by step tutorial, let’s take this video by the Everyday Hair Inspiration channel on youtube as our guide.

Step 1: Hair Prep

Doing dutch hair braid on yourself can be pretty challenging so the first thing to do is to do the necessary preparation. In this tutorial, Maryam is doing the dutch braid on both sides of the hair. So if you’re doing that make sure to separate the hair nice and clean.

Also, apply hair products to help you manage your hair. Applying hair serum to the tips of your hair will tame your hair if you have frizz.

A hair spray application near the roots will also help in making the process more manageable by giving your hair strand a bit of grit. This makes it easier to handle for your fingers so they don’t keep sliding away from your hands.

Step 2: Dutch Braid

In this next part of the procedure, let’s go through each step more carefully. If you know how to do a regular braid, dutch braids will be easy for you. It’s just a matter of weaving it the right way and which direction.

  • 2.a Three Strands

Begin with a part of your hair about 2 inches thick from where you want the braid to start. Further, separate into three sections that will start the weave. For the purpose of this tutorial, we will label it accordingly: the top strand, the middle strand, and the bottom strand.

  • 2.b First Weave

The idea is that a dutch braid weaves under the hair instead of over which is what happens with a French braid.

Following that general idea, begin with the top strand. You need to bring it under the middle strand but over the bottom strand. The original middle strand now becomes the top strand, the bottom strand now in the middle, and the original top strand is now at the bottom.

It can be confusing just by reading it so it is best to follow along as you read the instructions.

  • 2.c Create Rows

Now that you have a new top strand, middle strand, and bottom strand. We begin the process again, except that you now grab a new section of hair near the top strand and join it with the top strand. Bring it under the middle strand and into the center.

Now you have to work with the bottom strand, in the same way. This time around you need to bring it under the middle strand and into the center.

By this time you have your first section of the weave.

Step 3: Repeat

Repeat the whole process of adding a new section of hair to the top strand, bring it under the middle strand and into the center. Add a new section of hair to the bottom strand, bring it under the middle strand and into the center.

Repeat this over and over, each time alternating the strands and switching places from top, middle, and bottom.

Step 4: Secure the Dutch Braid

As you move along you will see that your dutch hair braid is coming together, longer as you move down the length of your hair.

Secure with a hair elastic once done.

Notice that the braid started off by weaving into the direction that you want the braid to follow. Isn’t it essentially a flipped over French braid?
