One of the best things about the end of summer is embracing a snuggly wardrobe, as well as ticking off some of the most popular new season trends, and I can’t think of a better way to do that than by investing in a new winter coat. If you’re going back to the office or working from home a while longer, it is the one wardrobe staple you’ll need no matter what.
For autumn/winter 2020/2021, there is a plethora of choices when it comes to outerwear. Whether you want to spice things up with a statement coat, or finally invest in a classic camel coat, we’ve found the best winter coats out there.
Autumn/winter 2021 coat trends
Let’s start with the maximalist end of the spectrum, shall we? Colourful coats have always been a staple, though which particular hue is in vogue of course depends on the trends of the season. If you’re after the trendiest option, then do hop onto the lilac bandwagon. Long reserved for spring/summer, the pastel shade is now a a must for the colder months, as seen at Hugo Boss and Alexander McQueen. For something a bit more durable, look to burnt orange or red tones.
Then we have your checked coats, which have been given a makeover for the new season. Think heritage checks on oversized coats and capes – look to Celine and Dior for inspiration.
For a slightly more casual approach, the puffa jacket has never been so strong – or chic. At Max Mara it was beige and tailored, at Chanel it was quilted and cropped, while at Prada it was oversized.
Finally, for the minimalist amongst you, be prepared for an upgrade on your favourite classics. Black coats get the Matrix treatment with vinyl and leather finishes as well as longer hemlines, while camel coats introduce richer shades of chocolate, caramel and coffee.
The classic trench coat is is still very much a go-to, though this season, look for oversized tailoring to tick that 80s trend box. As ever, pair your newfound coat with new season ankle boots or classic white trainers. This season’s line-up is brilliantly diverse, so this winter’s coat edit comes with a caveat: you may find yourself wishing for extreme cold just so you can pile them on all at once.
