This isn’t just a pandemic trend, though. A recent survey found that nearly a quarter of Brits are planning to take a staycation in future instead of heading abroad.
With this in mind, it’s interesting to check out this year’s top staycation destinations on last-minute travel platform Snaptrip. Helpfully, they’re spread across the British Isles with hotspots in England, Scotland and Wales.
Snaptrip’s CEO Matt Fox said: “This year, many of us have explored parts of the UK we’ve never been to before which is actually a huge positive, as there are so many wonderful places to visit.
“It’s no surprise that West Sussex has come out on top this year with its beautiful coastline and acres of woodland to explore; it’s a great staycation spot.”
North Yorkshire is named the UK’s most visited county of 2020, with the pretty seaside town of Whitby its number one destination.
The historic city of York is also popular with visitors, as is nearby Harrogate.

Located on the UK’s northeast coast, Moray is named Scotland’s top staycation destination with a 156% increase in bookings.

Located on the country’s southwest coast, Mid Glamorgan is named Wales’s top staycation destination.
Occupying a picturesque stretch of coastline between Cardiff and Swansea, popular coastal towns in the region include Marcross, St Donats, Porthcawl and Ogmore-by-Sea.

Home to coastal towns including Worthing, Bognor Regis and Selsey, plus the historic cathedral city of Chichester, West Sussex is named 2020’s fastest-growing staycation destination.
Bookings increased 87% year-on-year – helped perhaps by its proximity to London. The average train journey from the capital to Worthing takes just 90 minutes.
