It’s funny how the itch to go blonde (or blonder) can sneak up at the most inopportune times, like during a global pandemic when many of us are stretching the weeks between salon visits. Still, here we are, sitting at home and mentally preparing for the long winter ahead, craving a kind of confidence-boosting hair change that can only come by way of a fresh set of highlights.

If you’re in the market for inspiration, even if just for future manifestation, we’ve got you covered. Ahead, we’ve broken down the top three blonde tones trending this season. Whether you’re feeling something icy and dramatic, warm and sandy, or a blended bronde that falls somewhere in between (with low upkeep), scroll ahead to find fresh blonde shades for winter 2020 that will inevitably bleed into 2021.

Cream Bronde

If you’re a natural brunette (even the darkest shade), this is your low-maintenance approach to blonde. Celebrity colourist and Redken ambassador Max Gourgues calls it a cream bronde, which essentially blends cool, cream-colored blonde highlights with a brown root shade, focusing the brightest tones just around the face frame and incorporating lowlights to make them pop.

R+Co colorist Richy Kandasamy shows that to achieve the most natural-looking bronde colour, placement is everything. Here, you can see that he focuses the cream blonde just around the face, creating a subtle, almost sun-kissed effect.

Golden Honey

From New York to L.A., top colourists recommend opening your mind to warm blonde shades, like strawberry and golden honey. “People who lived through the ’90s may feel scared of warmth because they think brassiness,” notes NYC-based Mark Ryan salon owner Ryan Trygstad. But there’s a delicate line between honey blonde and orange, and the former is actually super flattering when executed correctly. L.A.-based colourist Bianca Hillier recommends asking for balayage (or Pintura painting), over foil highlights, and bringing lots of visuals to your appointment.

Colourist Kelsey Hellenbrand calls this shade “melted honey,” because it blends those reflective warm golden tones with a brunette base for a dimensional effect that can only be described as soft and melty.

Platinum Ice

If you’re looking for a major change — maybe a fitting complement to a dramatic new-year big chop — there’s always icy platinum. According to colourist Cheryl Roberts, a cool blonde always works in the colder months. “An icy blonde tone can help clients feel wintery without having to go darker,” she explains. “Plus, it can have a striking effect, especially on clients with dark eyebrows or eye colour.” Chic visual inspiration, here, comes by way of L.A. colourist Cherin Choi and her client Jodie Turner-Smith.

If you’re thinking a bright icy blonde that stops just short of white, channel this colour by Madison Rae Garrett, a colourist based out of New York City’s Spoke & Weal Salon. The single-process lift marries yellow blonde with reflective violet for a platinum shade that will look killer (even over Zoom).
