Lockdown 3.0 (yes I know, I’m tired of writing about it too) means that we’re having to limit our workouts to Zoom classes or runs, but at least having the best workout clothes is something that we can control.

Luckily the sportswear game has never been stronger, with designers, high street brands and sports labels answering our need for trend-led performance clothing. In fact, it’s one of the few fashion categories  – with loungewear – that we’ve truly bought into this year.

Tory Burch, whose latest Tory Sport collection has now launched, confirms our interest in leisurewear has shifted since the pandemic, ‘Sportswear reflects the changes in women’s lives, our increased freedom and opportunity. It’s a genuine American invention founded on women gaining more freedom at work, home and in society.

In the pandemic, we’ve seen women drawn to everyday luxury, timelessness and utility: a tracksuit paired with a soft Fair Isle sweater, a fleece worn over a caftan, trousers with a puffer vest. Women want pieces that are effortless, chic and exquisitely made – sportswear that can be dressed up or feel casual, worn outdoors, or to an intimate dinner.’

Don’t think you have to stick to one style either, there are so many different styles you could adopt for your workouts. If you’re going for a stroll or a run, it’s all about layering a puffa jacket over tracksuits or knitted separates, finished off with track sole boots or dad trainers.

We’re seeing some heavy 80s and 90s influences, thanks to crop tops, floral prints and pastels and neons, so you can have a bit of fun with your look. Leotards are hot right now (sustainable brands Silou and Ernest Leoty have some great ones), and they make for the perfect pilates outfit, especially as you can just throw on a cardigan if you don’t want to change afterwards.
